At the 11:00am Mass on July 1st, the Knights of Columbus Robert W. Powell Council presented Rhonda Nieves with a $100 bond in honor of her achievement in earning the Girl Scout's Gold Award. She and two other girls, Victoria Ellerbe and Kimberly Gamble, from troop1485 in Uniondale recently reached this highest level of achievement in the Girl Scouts. It had been twelve years since a Uniondale girl made the Gold Award level. Rhonda designed, printed and distributed a community newsletter on AIDS as her Gold Award Project.
Rhonda wore her uniform, covered with the many badges she had earned on her quest for the Gold. She believed that she would be attending a Scout program after Mass and Msgr. Caldwell, in on the secret, permitted her to wear the uniform while serving on the altar since it was "Fourth of July week!" So this very dedicated and responsible young lady was very surprised when William Ludewig introduced Gerard Boettcher, Powell Council Grand Knight and had him present Rhonda with the bond.
Not only is Rhonda an altar server at St. Martha's and a Girl Scout, she is a junior firefighter in the Uniondale Fire Department, a member of the National Honor Society, the Marching Band at Uniondale High School and completed her Junior year with honors. Congratulations Rhonda and thank you to the Knights for allowing the entire congregation to share this proud moment with her and her aunt, Marie Lebron.
